It was an unforgettable event as leaders and Catholic faithful from all walks of life converged at Uzima University College in Kisumu to witness the installation of Archbishop Philip Anyolo as the new Kisumu Archbishop. Leaders led by Deputy President William Ruto and NASA leader Raila Odinga graced the occasion and called for peace and tranquility among Kenyans. DP Ruto said the time for divisive politics was over and as leaders they have decided to work together to realize the dream of the country that includes the Big Four Agenda.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving development across the country and applauded the church saying it has played a great role in development and other vital issues. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said the church has a role in shaping the society saying there are many evils being witnessed including corruption and nepotism which need to be dealt with. He called upon the church to shun leaders who involve themselves in such vices in the society. He applauded the efforts of former archbishop Zacchaeus Okoth divulging that one time he helped him escape from Kenya after dressing him in full priesthood attire which kept him from being identified at police roadblocks. He affirmed that with him being part of the Building bridges Initiative, all will be well when it comes to the final recommendations.

His sentiments were echoed by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula who said the retired Archbishop played a role in the establishment of the 2010 constitution. He applauded the efforts of the church saying it has made it possible for politicians to work together. President Kenyatta’s speech, which dwelt on peace, was read out by Defence CS Rachel Omamo. Nairobi archbishop John Cardinal Njue said the new archbishop will still be in charge of his former Homa Bay diocese until someone else takes over.
