This was disclosed by Kacheliba constituency MP Mark Lomunokol who said that residents have been forced to migrate to Uganda to save their only source of livelihood from perishing. Lomunokol said that over half of the entire population has run out of food stock and most people are surviving on one meal per day. “Last year there was total crop failure in my region and right now my people are suffering. The drought situation in the region is bad and I call upon both the national and County governments to help in mitigation,” he said.
He said water sources in the region have dried up and residents are forced to walk over 20 kilometres to access water for home consumption. He said currently animals from his region are grazing at Amudat, Nakapiripirit, Kwen, Moroto and Nabilatuk districts in Uganda. The legislature thanked the Ugandan Administration for allowing animals from the region to access pasture and water in the region.
Lomunokol asked the herders to adhere to grazing rules that were set by the Uganda government so that they can continue grazing in the region until the rainy season sets in. The MP expressed fears that the school calendar in the region may be affected if urgent measures are not put in place. “Pupils in lower classes are the most affected since they cannot walk the long distances to schools on empty stomachs,” he said.
He also expressed fears that cases of malnutrition may be on the rise in the region if urgent measures are not taken to ensure children below five years get food supplements amidst the drought. “Children below five years usually depend on cow milk and right now most of the animals have migrated and residents cannot afford to buy other foodstuffs to feed the young ones,” he said.
