Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has decried the escalating corruption in his government’s revenue department which has led to the County losing millions of shillings in the past seven years.

Governor Ojaamong has revealed that there are corrupt officers in that department who loot most of the money they collect hence the County records deteriorating revenue collection, “From 2013-2014 we had collected Kshs 303 million, in 2016 we collected Kshs 256 million so it has been declining anyway and this year it has even been worse because up to the third quarter we have around Kshs 188 million.”

The Governor who was speaking during the launch of the cashless system of revenue collection through the County Pay bill number 635929 at the County Headquarter grounds in Busia Town, observed that the corruption has denied Busia County residents quality services from his government,

“There are so many leakages. There are some people who are depending on the County government money denying the residents service delivery.”

He exuded confidence that the new cashless system will tame the corruption and boost revenue collection to up to one billion in a financial year, “The launch of the Cashless system of collecting revenue is a milestone achievement which will help seal leakages that have led to the decline in revenue collection and we target to collect one billion shillings a year.”

The Governor warned that he will not tolerate individuals who will try to sabotage the system, further revealing that the World Bank had injected Kshs 47 million towards training of revenue officers and County staff in related departments to improve on revenue collection across the County.

On her side, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance Phaustine Barasa thanked the Governor for constituting security and enforcement officers saying they have contributed greatly in improving on revenue collection.
