The Kisoko Catholic Parish Priest James Otaga has condoled with the family of Everlyne Masinde, one of the pilgrims who died after being involved in an accident along the Iganga-Jinja highway in Uganda. On Sunday, pilgrims who were walking to Namugongo in Kampala for the Martyrs’ Day on June 3rd were knocked by a speeding matatu, two died on the spot while two died on arrival at Iganga Hospital. The pilgrims numbered at least 100 from Naitiri and Kisoko parishes, and five others who were injured were rushed to Iganga hospital to receive treatment.
“We have come to condole with the family of Everlyne Masinde,” said Otaga, “We are together with them…in Kisoko, we have lost two pilgrims, Everlyne and Sarah, so pray for us.” One of the injured, Kevin Akila, who is still receiving treatment, said the pilgrims had spent the night at Iganga and set out once again heading towards Jinja early in the morning on Sunday and after walking for about two hours, the speeding Nissan emerged, “There is a guy who was one of us, who tried to motion to the driver to reduce the speed.” However, some pilgrims expressed their determination to reach Namugongo and proceed with the pilgrimage.
