West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has said the County government has set up peace schools along the border of West Pokot and other neighbouring Counties in order to tackle the problem of cattle rustling. He noted that to deal with the problem of rustling, one must go straight to the genesis of the problem, “We have built a mega school that is going to bring kids from Turkana County, Baringo County and West Pokot.” He said 30% to 35% of kids from communities that were warring with the Pokots will school together from class three to form four, with uniforms, foods, and books provided for free.
The Governor said three schools have been put up to cater for the same. Speaking during an interview on JKL show, he said the County government has launched different programs to help the West Pokot residents, and that he is set to give out 250 bulls to West Pokot residents.
He said the County administration has also prioritized cash crop farming, “We have tested all the soils of Pokot land, we know which crop fits where….which County produces the best pyrethrum with the highest (pyrethrum) content in Kenya? Lela, West Pokot. We have now introduced tea….” He said West Pokot also has the highest number of Merino sheep, and 50,000 to 80,000 litres of milk is produced daily in the County.
