EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak has urged Kenyans to join in the anti-graft war and play their role. The Commission has intensified the war on graft recently, although notable convictions are yet to be made. Within the past four months, EACC has recovered stolen assets worth Kshs 2.7 billion, opposed to an average of Kshs 1.5 billion in the last five years. “This issue of saying the war against corruption is just for the anti-corruption commission(shouldn’t be)…we cannot say that the war against crime is just by the police, the police take the leading role, we take the leading role in fighting corruption but we cannot work without the support of the public,” said Twalib.
He said in the new push for asset recovery, EACC is focusing on unexplained wealth by public officers, to ensure people are accountable. He cited an example from Italy, where there are certain payments you can’t use cash, “The purpose of that is to ensure they trace all kind of financial transactions…in future that will be the way forward.”
