The Trans Nzoia Workers Union has threatened to sue the leadership of Trans Nzoia County over its failure to permanently employ 24 accountants contracted November last year. Led by the Trans Nzoia Union of Workers chairman Samuel Kiboi, they have given the County administration one week to effect their demand of employing them on permanent and pensionable terms, claiming they have been subjected to tough times.
The workers have said despite being employed by the County government last year, they haven’t been deployed anywhere. “We have given the County administration until next week Tuesday to deploy the 24 accountants it employed, failure to which we are moving to Court to sue the County Government over its ineffectiveness to address workers’ demands,” said Kiboi.
Kiboi noted that the administration has been relying on
services from volunteers who they claim are used as cash cows from the
County government.
There are more than 200 volunteers deployed in various County
Ministries as well as 50 boda boda operators who were recently employed
by the County government in the tax collection department, especially collecting tax from boda bodas. Since they were taken in, they haven’t been paid.
The Workers Union chairman said lack of salaries for the employed boda boda youths has led them to a path of corruption, including arresting some of their colleagues and asking for bribes. He further challenged the County Employment Board to come clean and state how it employed some workers without putting into consideration their welfare claiming there is a dubious deal between the County government and the Employment Board.
