A Kshs 10 million water project estimated to benefit at least six thousand people in Nangina ward, Samia sub county in Busia County is almost complete. Busia County chief officer for water and sanitation Moses Weunda, while on inspection tour to the project at Madibira, said the work is 79 percent complete and is likely to get complete in two weeks time.

Mr. Weunda hailed the contractor for endeavouring to complete the project within the agreed time frame, “The contractor has done a commendable job and he is likely to finish the project within the agreed twelve weeks time. Right now he is testing the pipes to see if there are leakages.” The project is funded by devolution support program.

According to the project engineer Mr. Isaiah Andati, the water will be pumped by solar to various centres including Odiado and Mumbaka and collected by residents through water kiosks built in those centres and at various strategic points in villages, “Those who will wish we shall connect pipes to there homes while the rest will draw water from water kiosks we have built. This is phase one of the project and phase two will see more homesteads and shopping centres supplied with clean water.”

The two added that apart from the Madibira water project, the County government in collaboration with development partners is working on other water projects in the county including Busia town, Khwirale in Nambale sub county and Busijo water project in Samia sub county, “The Nambale project is complete and will benefit over one thousand people while works at Busijo and Busia town are ongoing and aims at increasing water supply to more residents.”

Weunda has appealed to beneficiaries to take good care of the projects and to the general Busia County population to pay their water bills on time to enable the county government to sustain and maintain the projects and improve water service delivery, “When they pay their bills on time it enables us to provide them with better services as we will be able to do repairs and improve our services to them but when they fail to pay we shall also lack capacity to serve them efficiently. So my appeal to Busia County residents is that let them be paying water bills on time without failing. I also urge those who are near these water projects we are implementing to take good care of them because they are there to help them,” Weunda appealed.
