Drama ensued at the EACC offices in Nairobi as Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and his supporters engaged in a drawn-out tussle with officers, who lobbed teargas canisters to disperse his supporters. The Nairobi Governor had been summoned by EACC, for interrogation to further shed light on his past life. Speaking to the press Governor Sonko claimed a political war has been waged against him and that there are cartels who want to grab public property and the only way they can do that is to remove him from power.
He said they are using a case against him that happened back in 1997 as the main weapon to ensure he is chopped down.
He alleged that the EACC Director of Investigations Muhammad Abdi has a friend and a relative too who grabbed a public playground land meant for children in 2014 at South C and they are building a mall which he (Sonko) is against. From that, he said he has received four summons which are positioned like threats to make him consent to the mall construction. However, he has insisted that he’ll ensure the building is demolished for it’s public land.
In the commotion, journalists were caught in the running and two people are reportedly admitted at hospital due to harassment at the hands of police officers.
“People have been brutally injured…..Why should police teargas citizens instead of maintaining law and order?” posed Babu Owino, Embakasi East MP.
