Dairy farmers in Nandi have cried foul over a drop in milk prices despite the high costs of animal feeds and veterinary services. Speaking to West FM, former councillors William Birech from Nandi Hills and Paul Kerich Mosop who are venturing into the industry cited a great drop in milk prices which has left farmers wondering what’s the way to go.
They revealed that most of their farmers sell their milk to milk cooperative creameries and traders who buy it at a low price, a situation which has made life very difficult for farmers due to heavy losses. They said the price has dropped from Kshs 30 to Kshs 20 per litre, and urged the County government of Nandi to speed up the construction of the milk processing plant in Kabiyet to benefit them as they will sell directly their milk to the plant at favorable prices.
County government of Nandi launched the construction of the milk processing plant in Kabiyet which will help farmers find a market for their commodity and thus will mark the end of challenges milk farmers face.
The chief officer for the Ministy of Agriculture and Livestock Nandi County Benadatte Tiony said the county government of Nandi on behalf of farmers is working towards a consensus with local milk processors to bargain for better milk prices. She said that the county government of Nandi is also working on placing milk cooling plants in each ward to boost dairy farmers.
