A Swarm of locusts has been sighted in Chepchoina, Endebess sub county and Kwanza in Trans Nzoia County. While confirming the locusts’ presence, Trans Nzoia County commissioner Sam Ojwang said locals reported seeing the locusts moving at high speed through the Suam orchards, ADC farms in Chepchoina, heading towards Kwanza sub county.
Some of the locals, led by David Sappiri in Endebess confirmed the sighting, “We were resting at our farms when we saw a swarm of locusts in the sky, coming from the direction of Uganda and headed towards,” said Sappiri.
The County Commissioner urged residents to report any sightings in their areas to their respective local administrations for action to be taken. He said he has ordered chiefs as well as DCCs in the sub counties to monitor the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) farms, noting the County’s importance as Kenya’s bread basket.

He, however, disclosed that the national government in collaboration with the County government of Trans Nzoia is prepared for any eventualities and they’re working together to ensure all necessary steps are taken to address the locust menace.
He cautioned the neighbouring Counties of West Pokot, Bungoma and Elgeyo Marakwet, urging them to be on the lookout. According to the national government, at least 17 Counties have been affected by the locust menace so far.
