The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Lugari campus will be converted into a Primary Teachers Training College. Speaking during a public participation meeting held at the institution under the chairmanship of Lugari deputy County Commissioner William Lenaremo, residents unanimously endorsed proposals to change the use and transfer of the land initially allocated to JKUAT-Lugari campus.

The locals said since Lugari Constituency and the entire Western region is a big attraction area for teachers, the college will experience rapid growth further fostering development in area. Area MP Ayub Savula implored the locals, community leaders and education stakeholders to hasten the process that will see the national government release funds for the TTC. Savula disclosed that the move will see the Ministry of Education send 600 students to the institution in this year’s September intake.

The Lugari Diploma Teachers Training College-in Lumakanda Ward-has been mandated to carry out the mentorship program for the first cohort of 600 students and further facilitate the title deed acquisition process for St. Paul’s Secondary school Lugari, Lugari Primary School, Lugari Teachers Training College and a Catholic Church that is the sponsor of the institution. Speaking during the meeting, Lugari deputy county commissioner William Lenaremo urged leaders to stop politicizing development programmes and instead work together for their success.

JKUAT-Lugari Campus which has been dormant for some time became a victim to the Commission for University Education (CUE) after it failed to meet the expected threshold, following a directive by the Ministry of Education that saw over 57 University campuses closed.
