The government has abandoned the search and retrieval of bodies at Chesegon along the West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties after a mudslide wrecked havoc on Saturday. Heavy rains were witnessed throughout Saturday night and mud and boulders were tossed up from the Kipchumwa and Cheptulel hills, down to Chesogon below, with houses, property destroyed including the Chesegon police post and several people killed.
On Thursday, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya said the search, rescue and retrieval efforts which began on Saturday would be abandoned. This is due to the large soil mounds, debris covering the area of focus, making it a mission impossible. “The government is sending condolences to the families,” he said. 18 bodies have been recovered and 17 are still missing according to Natembeya.
