Coronavirus cases in Kenya have risen to 1,888 after 143 people tested positive. Speaking on Saturday, Health CAS Rashid Aman said the cases were recorded after 2,959 samples were tested in 24 hours. The death toll has increased to 63 after one patient succumbed to the disease, while 26 more people have been discharged, the number of recoveries now at 464.
Nairobi County has 86 cases, Mombasa has 25, Uasin Gishu 11, Kiambu 6, Busia 3, Kwale 3, Migori 3, Kajiado 1, Kisii 1, Garissa 1, Isiolo 1, Kericho 1, Makueni 1. Makadara has the most cases in Nairobi with 45, followed by Kibra with 21. In Mombasa, Likoni leads with 11 cases, in Uasin Gishu all 11 cases are of truck drivers at Turbo. Kiambu has 3 cases in Kabete, one each in Juja, Ruiru and Kiambaa. In Busia, the new cases are in Alupe quarantine facility (2) and 1 at the Malaba border entry point. Kericho has joined the list of Counties with reported cases, 33 in number.
Health CAS Aman noted the rate of infection in informal settlements continues to increase, “If the numbers that we pick up in these settings continue to increase a point will come when it will be necessary to take some form of action to contain the spread of the virus in these places.” He also faulted leaders who flout health directives to combat the spread of the virus, a day after COTU boss Francis Atwoli hosted more than 40 Luhya leaders at his residence in Kajiado.
