Police and boda boda operators in Lugari sub County got a major boost in the fight against Covid-19 after receiving a donation of masks, soaps and water containers from the ODM director of communication Mr. Philip Etale.
Speaking when he delivered the protective equipment to various stations and boda boda groups on behalf of Etale, Abdi Hassan said the riders ferry many people on a daily basis while police also interacted with many locals and thus were given first priority in the issuance of the masks.
“The riders due to the nature of their work come into contact with many people therefore it is important that they protect themselves and their customers to curb the spread of the deadly virus,” said Abdi.
He urged boda boda operators to ensure they put on masks daily saying failing to do so puts the lives of many residents at risk of contracting the disease. “To defeat Covid-19, it is our collective responsibility to carry ourselves in a manner that does not put us and those we cherish at risk, therefore at all times we are expected to wear masks in public places, wash hands with soap regularly and avoid touching our faces,” said Abdi.
His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Saul Ambani who urged the riders to ensure they maintain high standards of hygiene by washing the reusable masks daily as well as washing their hands with soap and running water frequently.
He further urged them to maintain social distancing even as they queue to wait for customers, maintain order and adhere to all government directives in efforts to curb the spread of the killer virus.
On police officers, Mr. Ambani said the donation will help address concerns from members of the public over the safety of the police officers during their operations in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
He said many residents have been ironically wondering whether the police are immune to the virus but with the donation the officers will be able to put on masks and lead from the front by setting a good example to the public.
Mr. Ambani called on Kenyans to help the government in combating the pandemic in their small ways.
The riders thanked Etale for having their lives at heart and giving his support in the fight against Coronavirus.
