Kiminini MP Dr Chris Wamalwa has called on the national government to consider re-opening churches for congregation services as long as members adhere to the social distancing rules and other safety measures prescribed by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Speaking in his constituency, the Kiminini legislator petitioned the government to put in mind the roles that those in churches play, including praying for the nation as well as preaching of peace amongst the faithful, claiming it was wrong for the government to consider opening up of restaurants while not doing the same for churches.
“We call on the national committee to give room for churches to start fully operating because we all need divine help to effectively combat this
pandemic even as we sensitize Kenyans to observe safety measures,” he said.
He however appealed to the County government of Trans Nzoia to account for funds disbursed by the national government to combat the
spread of the Coronavirus though the region’s emergency response Committee.
He said the level of preparedness by the county government is wanting in comparison to what is being done by other devolved administrations where Governors are leading the pack in fighting the pandemic.
“Governor Patrick Khaemba has gone in to hiding at a time when the residents are looking up to him to offer practical solutions to the
challenges brought about by the pandemic since he is the county boss,” he said.
He also challenged the administrators to remain non partisan when distributing relief food contributed by the Government claiming some
administrators are being involved in corrupt activities when distributing food.
“We have information n that some chiefs are involved in corrupt activities as most of them are keeping some relief food for their
families while denying the needy ones. We are giving a stern warning to such leaders,” said Wamalwa.
The MP distributed foodstuffs to vulnerable families and residents within Kiminini constituency through the area chiefs. He gave a similar donation to the Kitale Catholic Diocese priests.
