The Education sector has been allocated 497.7 billion in the 2020/2021 budgetary allocations, corresponding to 26% of the total budget. Treasury CS Ukur Yatani said the government is committed to improving and supporting the education sector. Under the budget, Kshs 12.4 billion has been set aside for free primary education and Kshs 59.4 billion for free secondary education program. Exam fees have also been waivered, for KCPE and KCSE students, Kshs 4 billion to cater for that.
With the poor teachers to pupils ratio in schools countrywide, Kshs 2 billion has been set aside for hiring of 5,000 teachers. Kshs 800 million has been set aside for improving digital literacy program and the new Competence Based Curriculum. Kshs 1.8 billion will cater for the schools feeding program. Institutions of Higher Learning have not been left behind, with Kshs 94.1 million meant to support university education. Kshs 6.3 billion will be channeled to the construction of Technical and Vocational Training centres. Kshs 16.8 billion will be set aside for the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Kshs 323 million will cater for research.
