With Covid-19 cases in the border Counties not declining, focus has shifted to the Malaba and Busia border points in Busia County which is steadily recording more and more cases among truck drivers. On Thursday, Health CAS Rashid Aman said 20 cases had been reported in Busia County, all cases of truck drivers at Malaba.
The County now has 84 Covid-19 cases, mostly truck drivers. The government said it had nicer to deal with the traffic lock experienced for days of truck drivers, noting that the Malaba border was still posing problems. Health CAS Aman urged truck drivers to follow the laid down protocols, which include testing for Covid-19 48 hours before departure from the points of origin and receiving a certificate once tested negative to certify one’s status in order to deal with a backlog. This had clearly been an issue at the Busia border points.
The CAS noted that the government is also moving to deal with backlog of samples, “Sometimes it’s created not only by the sheer number of samples but logistics of moving samples to different places or a lack of reagents,” he said, adding that they have prioritized the areas where results are needed urgently, notably quarantine centers and truck drivers. This is bound to shed a clear light on the status of the Coronavirus spread among truck drivers and border Counties like Busia.
