Floods victims across Webuye West Constituency have received iron sheets and building material courtesy of John Musundi’s programme to help flood victims whose houses were swept away as a result of heavy downpour that has been experienced in the region and across the country.
Led by Protus Lumonje, Musundi’s team traversed across the constituency and identified households that needed swift help and those who had moved to schools to seek refuge after their houses were destroyed by heavy rains.
Speaking during the distribution of the building material to the affected victims, Protus Lumonje revealed how they attained the call for helping the victims.
He pitied the lives of flood victims and urged other leaders to also join hands and ensure that Webuye West’s affected flood victims have a good place to stay.
“We went to Mukite primary school where most floods victims had sought refuge since their houses were swept by heavy rains, through our son John Musundi we promised to help them build houses so we have honored our promise by bringing them these iron sheets and other building material,” explained Lumonje.
He however, urged residents and leaders from Webuye West not to politicize the whole programme but to support it and see that every individual stays comfortable even during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
“In future we should look at leaders who hold their people’s needs at heart,” he added.
Some of the beneficiaries thanked Musundi for reaching out to them and offering assistance since many of them were living with their relatives. Some were still in houses that were on the brink of collapsing and others had moved to schools as points of refuge like those from Sitikho ward had camped at Mukite Primary school which was closed officially last week and the victims were told to pack and go back to their homes.
“I am a widow and I had no one to assist me put up a house since my only house was brought down by the heavy rains, I take this time to express my gratitude to Musundi for coming to my aid,” one of the beneficiaries from Misikhu ward said.
“Our houses were brought down by the rains something that compelled us to move to Mukite primary school to live there, Musundi’s team came and promised to help us build other houses and he has come to our rescue, we pray that he continues to help us in other ways,” said a resident from Kuywa in Sitikho ward.
“My husband died in 2013 and this house I’m staying in was built in 1975. As you can see it is almost coming down, the walls have cracks and I don’t sleep well at night. When it starts raining I always scream so that anybody can hear my voice and rescue me,” said a resident from Makunda in Bokoli ward who also benefitted from the programme.
Initially, Musundi team had visited the victims that had camped at Mukite primary school and vulnerable people at Khalumuli and Milo where they donated foodstuffs to help them during this Coronavirus pandemic.
Among the beneficiaries were widows, persons living with disabilities and other deprived residents in the constituency.
A total of 25 households have benefited from the programme and more are yet to benefit since the programme is on-going.
Each household got 16 iron sheets and other building materials.
