The Nandi County Assembly Ad hoc committee investigating graft allegations facing various dockets in Nandi has set out to grill CECs in key dockets. The committee which is chaired by Tinderet MCA Kipkurui Chepkwony summoned the Nandi CECs for Education, Lands and Health sectors to answer to graft allegations. The committee has had time to grill the Education CEC Grace Sugut following the leaked document on social media platforms that indicated a budget of 400 bags of cement costing Kshs 3 million from the department of education caused a stir.
The Education CEC said it was down to a typing error and that the cement bags should have been 4000 not 400 as indicated in the document and she regretted the error adding that they have corrected the document. “There is no time the County government of Nandi will ever purchase cement at that price thus I reiterate that there was a typing error and we have corrected it,” she said. The CEC affirmed that the budget item in question was a budget item that had already been approved in the financial year of 2019/2020 and this was just a request for works in progress to be carried over and included in the budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.
Finance CEC Alfred Lagat was also grilled on the questionable Kshs 218 million World Bank Project funds in Nandi and how Kshs 71 million was allegedly was transferred to a personal account last year. Lands CEC Dr Philemon Bureti was summoned to answer questions on the questionable purchase of 2 borehole drilling machines at inflated costs yet the machines are not working. Health CEC Ruth Koech was grilled over the purchase of Covid-19 temperature measuring machine to be used in hospitals. The cost is Kshs 7,000 yet the indicated price was Kshs 17,000 according to budget records.
