Only 12 Counties have met the requirement of 300 Covid-19 isolation beds according to Council of Governors chairman and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya. Speaking during a virtual meeting involving County and national government coordination teams led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Governor Oparanya said Counties have attained a total of 6,898 isolation beds against the national target of 30,500 with other Counties on course to meet the targeted 300 isolation beds within the next month.
President Kenyatta informed Governors that the level of preparedness to handle Covid-19 cases at the Counties will determine if the country will be reopened or not. So far, 16,914 health personnel have been trained on Covid-19 management, with 59,449 community health volunteers also trained. He added that home-based Covid-19 management protocols have been rolled out as a result of the partnership between the Council of Governors, the Ministry of Health and partners.
He said the Council of Governors supports the gradual reopening of the economy subject to setting up of a strict regime of Covid-19 containment protocols for businesses, places of worship and inter county travel. 36 Counties have a cumulative number of 343 ICU beds while 28 Counties have 337 ventilators.
