Angry residents in Kapenguria town and its environs have expressed disgust at the frequent power disconnections due to unpaid bills in the area in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. For the last one week there have been power cuts in the area even those with bills as little as Kshs 100.
Speaking to the press in Kapenguria, they said that life has been adversely affected by the Coronavirus and they are unable to pay the electricity bills.
The residents said the power disconnections are unbearable and it’s affecting their businesses and lives at home.
The traders said they continued to suffer losses running into millions of shillings due to the frequent disconnections and inflated bills.
Led by Jane Cheyech, they called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene so that the bills can be waived and Kenya Power to be directed to avert the power cuts.
“We want Kenya Power to explain to us why we have to suffer like this without even notices on the power cuts being issued. We are counting losses because most of our businesses cannot be run without electricity,” said David Ruto, who runs a cyber café business at Makutano town.
He complained that KPLC has failed to reliably supply electricity to the general population, adding that electricity availability plays a crucial role in the running of the economy.
