Parents in Nandi County and across the country have been asked to embrace parenting by taking good care of their children especially through the Covid-19 pandemic which cut short the school calendar forcing the closure of learning institutions. Nandi County children’s department coordinator Mrs. Hellen Wanyama said that majority of parents have neglected their parenting role.
She said that cases of child negligence are high in the region and parents should move with speed to address the problem. She revealed that her office has been receiving lots of child negligence cases and last year they received over a thousand cases. The officer noted that such cases can be linked to early teenage pregnancies because children have been ignored and left on their own. “As a department we have planned to carry out sensitization concerning parenting through an initiative of recruiting volunteer child protection services to deal with issues of child negligence and teenage pregnancies among other important issues,” she said.
She also revealed the department is coming up with with a location area advisory council to tackle the problems. The advisory council is to be chaired and spearheaded by chiefs together with their assistants to ensure every child is being taken good care of by their parents.
