President Uhuru Kenyatta has said truth and fairness will prevail in the revenue allocation stand off at the Senate. The President, however, has refused to be drawn into the debates and wrangles surrounding the debate, saying the formula was formulated by the CRA, “The money doesn’t belong to Uhuru so that people can blame me….the formula was taken to the Senate, and it’s meant to ensure resources are shared in a fair way.”
The initial formula as proposed by the CRA and tabled by the Senate Finance Committee, which uses the population parameter as the key determinant for allocating funds to Counties instead of land mass, has met opposition from various Senators, representing Counties that are set to lose funding and others whose Counties will gain but didn’t agree with the formula.
Speaking while issuing 38,000 title deeds to Embakasi, Korogocho, Tassia residents at the KICC on Friday, the President said the assumption shouldn’t be that Nairobi is a rich County and doesn’t need money, yet people are suffering in slums, “Why should it be as a Nairobi resident-just because it’s said to be a rich County and you who live in Embakasi and Korogocho slums still put your stool in paper bags-you’re told you don’t need money?” he posed. The Senate has held ten sittings so far, with no solution on the table concerning the impasse, despite amendments pushed by different Senators. A 12 member committee was on Monday formed to find a solution to the stalemate.
