Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has urged the national government to operationalize the Kshs 10 billion fund to cater for the compensation of victims of historical injustices in order to benefit their families who are now living as squatters.
Speaking during the 115th memorial of Nandi Orkoiyot Koitalel Samoei on Monday in Nandi, Governor Sang said it is unfortunate that the families of the freedom fighters have been reduced to destitutes, “It is unfortunate that the families of freedom fighters from across the nation are languishing in poverty, living as squatters yet their parents fought for the country’s independence,” he said.
He added that the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission report on the same captured some of the injustices meted to these freedom fighters during the colonial era but to date no steps of compensation have been taken thus appealed to the government to act swiftly and ensure the report is implemented fully.
Other leaders present at the event included Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis, who echoed Sang’s sentiments. They also suggested that the Koitalel Samoei commemoration be held in different locations across the North Rift economic bloc.
