The National Police Service will undertake the nationwide enforcement operations such as speeding, drank driving, lane indiscipline among others to address persistent traffic irregularities. In a joint statement from the Police and NTSA, they said random drank driving tests, commonly known as alcoblow will be conducted in all major towns, from today, “The government has noted with great concern the rising cases of road traffic accidents across the country, majority due to failure to comply with basic road safety requirements.”
According to NTSA, 2,689 people have lost their lives between 1st January and 30th September this year, and at the same period last year, 2,655 died, signalling a 1.3% increase in road accident deaths. Moreover, 60 people died from road accidents between 2nd and 4th October, the accidents attributed to speeding and drank driving. Of these, 23 were pedestrians, drivers were 4, motor cyclists were 16, passengers 7, pillion passengers were 9 and 1 cyclist.
