A Court in Nairobi on Tuesday ordered for the arrest of Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa over his failure to pay Kshs 1.8 million legal fees to lawyer Alfred Ndambiri. The MP is supposed to serve a civil jail term of six months. Ndambiri had represented Didmus in an election petition filed against him in 2017 by former MP Suleiman Murunga.
Magistrate D.M Kivuti directed that the order to arrest the MP be served to the Nairobi Central Officer Commanding Station. The lawyer had to file a case before magistrate D. M Kivuti after a long tussle to get the legal fees, and Barasa in seven different Court appearances had promised to clear the debt, but to no avail.
On the last adjournment of the case, Barasa pleaded with the Court and asked for exemption for 90 days. Kivuti, on October 9th, gave the Kimilili MP 45 days to clear the fees or face six months in jail, a time period which elapsed on Tuesday, 24th November.
