Over seventy casual workers at Kibabii University in Bungoma county are up in arms after they were dismissed from their duties as a new contractor took over cleaning services in the institution. Led by their chairman Robert Barasa, the workers expressed their dissatisfaction with the move saying it was their sole source of income. Barasa said it is unfortunate that the new contractor had to source for workers from other Counties yet they are present and they’ve been performing their duties diligently.
He alleged that they have also not been paid for the last three months and they are being wrongfully dismissed, adding that they won’t not accept that. His sentiments we’re echoed by other workers who said they are not happy with the dismissal and that some of them have been told they are too old to work yet they are under 40 years old.
Area MCA Joseph Juma Nyongesa assured them that after a consultative meeting on Tuesday they will be able to find a solution, saying the institution is meant to also benefit the locals. He said the unskilled labor should not be sourced from outside the County.
