A truck driver died on the spot while his colleague sustained serious injuries in a fatal road accident that involved two trucks at Kaburengu along Eldoret-Webuye highway in Matete, Kakamega County on Monday morning.
Confirming the incident, Matete Sub County Police Commander Thomas Ototo said the accident occurred after the brakes of a truck ferrying construction material failed while descending the steep Chimoi slope towards Webuye before the driver lost control and collided head on with another truck that was coming from the opposite side.
The vehicle ripped off the cabin of the second truck killing it’s driver on the spot before it veered off the road landing in a ditch and burst into flames as the driver of the first truck and his co-driver escaped with injuries.
Ototo has appealed to drivers plying along the highway to be extra careful while descending the Chimoi slope which is one of the black spots along the busy highway warning against driving on free gear. The injured were rescued and rushed to Webuye sub county hospital as the deceased’s body was also removed and taken to the mortuary at the same facility.
