Normal operations at Nzoia Sugar Company in Bungoma County are set to resume next week after a section of the machines were razed by fire on Thursday night. Nzoia Sugar Company managing director Michael Wanjala thanked the Bungoma County fire fighting department as well as the Company’s team for containing the fire saying the loss they have incurred is estimated to be Kshs 12 million.
He said the engineers ascertained that the fire started due to hot steam pipes which burst and extended to ignite biogas through a conveyor belt but fortunately they managed to contain it. The flames didn’t spread to affect key areas including the power house, the sugar warehouse among other places. He further assured the farmers who had supplied their sugarcane that it will not go to waste as they have put in place measures to ensure it is crushed.
