Education CS Prof. George Magoha has affirmed that school desks to be disbursed to primary and secondary schools will be ready by Friday next week. The Kshs 1.9 billion project, initiated by the national government, saw jua kali artisans contracted to make school desks, set to be disbursed at sub county level. The project, apart from seeking to improve infrastructure in schools, is also an economic stimulus drive to cushion artisans from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Magoha said once delivered, the artisans will be paid immediately, “By next week Friday all desks will be made and quality assurance will be done.” He said work will be shared when it comes to artisans who wouldn’t have finished or who may be too occupied. He said a thorough inspection of the work done will be conducted The project has drawn close criticism from a section of leaders who among other demands, said the money set aside for the cause shouldn’t be embezzled, and that resident artisans, in the sub counties, should get the tenders.
The Education CS also urged headteachers, and other key education stakeholders to keep preparing for the full reopening of schools in January. He said exam classes will continue preparing, as per the directive of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
