Youths, especially those who’ve been employed, have been urged to have a money savings plan or channel the money they earn to different viable projects so that when they retire of lose jobs they have something to fall back on. Addressing residents in Webuye East sub county, during her thanksgiving retirement ceremony, public health officer Emily Mukwanja said she was retiring a happy social worker since she had accomplished what she desired and started different projects.
She said it’s painful to see some people retiring but still looking for employment opportunities and competing with their own children because they squandered the chances to save and lived a life of luxury. She started planning for her retirement and focused on farming projects including poultry and animal farming which though hectic, have kept her going, “I started saving and pumping some of my savings and salary to projects when I realized I had only ten years of employment remaining. Therefore, for me coming home is a relief and it will allow me to focus on what I’m doing and my children,” she said.
She also stressed on the importance of ensuring children get the best education, since it’s the greatest investment, and faulted parents who are content with their kids attaining Form Four education. Her sentiments were echoed by Bungoma County public health officer Mr. Moses Wambusi who said Mukwanja has lefta legacy in the public health sector as a hard working person whose services will be highly missed.
He stated that he had been challenged by her planned retirement unlike other public servants who look for contract extensions since they hadn’t planned adequately. He urged youths not only to emulate her but seek advice from her.
