Western delights from Kakamega County are this year’s ladies champions of the annual Webuye railways club basketball tournament.
The quick and skillful ladies beat Swists from Bungoma County 34-26 to bag the trophy and cash in a tough final match that was played at Webuye cite and services estate.
In the men’s category, Lugulu stunned hosts Chetambe Bulls from Webuye to take home the trophy. Chetambe had edged out the Kakamega team while Lugulu had edged out Kimilili sonics in tough semis. Wesley Waswa from Lugulu bagged the most valuable player in the tournament in the men’s category while Elizabeth Wangeci from Bungoma bagged the most valuable player award in the women’s category.
Bungoma woman representative Catherine Wambilianga who was the chief guest at the games urged youths to engage in sporting activities in their free time to avoid bad vices like drug abuse during the festive period. She pledged that the basketball court will be upgraded before next year.
Arthur Mukoro, the patron of the Webuye basketball team asked the County government of Bungoma to ensure it also focuses on other games like basketball, instead of giving too much attention to football. “We would like to see a scenario whereby youths engaging in sports are reconised and even employed in counties as away of nurturing talents,” he said.
Don Liru, the second vice president of the Kenya basketball federation asked players to fully nurture their talents by engaging in various tournaments that will help identify their skills. “We are happy that basketball is growing even in villages and we are happy that as much as we have played in a dusty field we shall soon have a basket ball court here,” he said.
