Traders and residents of Obekai market in Teso South sub county, Busia County are living in fear after two people armed with guns invaded the market and robed them. The traders allege that the two men entered the market at dusk and started ordering people to put on masks, “They arrived on a motorbike and started shouting ‘mask mask’. When people heard that, they started running away, fearing to be arrested.”
They then went to a petrol station and beat up the attendant and took two thousand shillings together with one cell phone, “They then went to an M-Pesa shop where they ordered the attendant to lie down before they took six thousand shillings and two mobile phones.”
Local leaders and the traders led by Charles Kaunda have called on the police officers to investigate the incident suspecting the two gunmen could have been police officers, “We highly suspect they were police officers because when they arrived, they ordered people to put on masks. And the courage they had shows they were police officers. We want this incident to be investigated and the culprits brought to book.”
A few months ago, two people, a man and a woman, who had been armed with a gun attacked a night guard who was manning an M-Pesa shop at Ong’aroi market two kilometers away from Obekai market and injured him seriously although they didn’t manage to break into the shop.
