Grief has gripped Mlimani village in Mautuma location Lugari Sub County after a 39 year old woman was attacked and killed by a 40 year old man using an axe.
According to the deceased’s spouse Mr. Jafred Juma, his wife Christine Chegero a businesswoman, was attacked by the suspect identified as Duncan Tongolo Khakina while on her business at Mlimani market.
He said the wife who sells cereals and household utensils at the market was together with her three friends in her shed before she was attacked by Tongolo.
“They were seated together story telling when they saw the attacker running towards them carrying an axe. They sensed danger and tried to escape but two of her friends fell down as they scrambled to get out of the shed, when my wife tried to jump over them she stumbled and also fell before the man descended upon her with the axe cutting her severally on the head leaving her unconscious before fleeing the scene,” explained Juma.
The victim was rescued and rushed to Mautuma Sub County hospital where she was attended to before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Eldoret where she succumbed while undergoing treatment.
According to Juma the suspect was a family friend who has been visiting them and they could even help him when in need and he doesn’t know the reason behind his heinous act.
The incident has been bitterly condemned by residents led by Mr. Adrian Shikoli saying the suspect is a dangerous man who has been terrorizing them with different crude weapons and despite reporting at the Mlimani police patrol base on several occasions, no action has been taken against him leading to the incident.
Following the incident angry residents launched a manhunt for the suspect baying for his blood but he couldn’t be traced.
Confirming the incident, Lugari Sub County Police Commander Bernard Ngungu said the suspect surrendered himself to Lumakanda police station and that the DCI department has launched investigations into the incident to ensure justice prevails.
