West Pokot Governor Prof John Lonyangapuo has rooted for accountability in learning institutions and prudent use of funds and resources to ensure schools spend money meticulously.
The County boss said that schools have been turned into business hubs as school heads enrich their pockets as he asked locals to raise a red flag when they notice any school heads selling school property.
Speaking yesterday in Kapenguria, Lonyangapuo has faulted a number of school heads over misuse of school resources and selling school property.
He added that a number of school heads have already exhausted school funds hence asked auditors to conduct auditing to some schools.
The Governor asked school managers in public schools to safeguard the public monies by ascertaining that the funds received in the schools as fees are properly utilized.
“School fees paid by parents are part of public resources. You must ensure that the fees paid by parents was spent according to the regulations,” said Lonyangapuo
He noted that the National Government together with the County Governments were making desks in primary schools and chairs and beds for secondary schools and they should be managed well.
“The National and county governments want to ensure schools are equipped especially during this corona period,” noted Lonyangapuo.
He appealed to parents to report to authorities if they saw their principals and board chairmen misusing school money.
“Parents need to see the value of their money. We pay school fees for our children to learn,” he said.
Lonyangapuo said commercial banks where schools keep their accounts should monitor transactions.
“If the banks suspected misuse, they should report to the authorities so that action can be taken to the concerned institution,” he said.
Lonyangapuo said that the County government has given out bursaries for needy learners in schools.
Lonyangapuo said that parents must play their part to ensure their children got better quality education.
He urged parents to support schools and ensure that teachers were present in classrooms to teach their children.
