Five people died while scores of others sustained serious injuries in two separate road accidents that involved five vehicles and a motorbike at the Nzoia Bridge near Kaburengu trading center along Eldoret – Webuye highway.
The Saturday, August 21, accident involved two tipper-trucks, a pick-up, a probox, a petrol tanker and a motorbike.
According to the eye witnesses the first accident occurred after a tipper-truck that was ferrying construction materials towards Webuye developed brakes failure while descending the steep Chimoi slope ramming into three other vehicles.
The impact caused one of the vehicles to catch fire that spread tremendously, burning three vehicles with all four occupants in the probox burning beyond recognition.
The two tipper-trucks drivers and occupants of the pick-up were rescued and rushed to Webuye sub county hospital while the four bodies were taken to the mortuary at the same facility.
In a second incident a motorbike rider was crushed to death by a speeding petrol tanker at the same spot.
The rider who was on his way from Webuye heading towards Kaburengu was knocked from behind by the speeding tanker before it ran over him killing him instantly.
The body was removed and taken to Webuye mortuary.
