Construction of a bridge on Ogirem stream along Shitsimi – Lukhuna road in Lugari ward, Kakamega county has brought a sigh of relief to area residents, who have been putting their lives at risk over the years, while crossing the stream to access markets, schools and their farms.
Speaking while commissioning the use of the bridge, Mr. William Makhalanya Libombolo who sponsored the construction said the connection of the two villages will be a major boost to the social-economic activities in the area.
“With the opening of this bridge pupils in day schools from across the villages will easily access the schools even during rainy seasons which were a major challenge before,” said Makhalanya.

He regretted an incident where a primary school pupil narrowly escaped death after falling in the swollen stream while attempting to cross in the fast flowing waters during the rainy season.
“I was really touched by the incident and that is why I decided in my small capacity to put up this bridge to save our children, they will now safely cross the stream and access schools without any problem,” he added.

However, Makhalanya has appealed to the county government of Kakamega to renovate the feeder road that joins the bridge from the two sides for smooth movement of pedestrians and those using motorbikes.
Apart from the bridge, Makhalanya also commissioned the use of ten water springs in various parts of the ward in which he sponsored their protection to ensure residents get clean water for domestic use.
Makhalanya has promised to continue supporting various development projects in Lugari ward aimed at benefiting the community and empowering them economically.

Residents have thanked him for his philanthropic gesture saying they have been neglected for several years by elected leaders.
