Mukhonje residents in Matete, Kakamega County had an opportunity to loot thousands of pangas after a truck that was transporting the tools was involved in an accident in the area along the Eldoret – Webuye highway.
The 11pm accident occurred after the truck developed brakes failure while descending towards the Mukhonje trading centre before the driver lost control, veered off the road and fell.
Hundreds of residents living near the centre woke up, thronged the scene before breaking the vehicle and started looting the commodity that was on transit.
The residents are said to have stolen more than a half of the tools before police arrived later and stopped further looting.
The truck driver escaped with minor injuries.
