Trans Nzoia county voter registration is low since its inception on 17th January 2022 in a worrying scenario that has made IEBC county manager Lazarus Chebis calling upon locals to turn up and register in the exercise that is on going.
While addressing the media, Chebii said only 8, 482 have registered against the targeted people of 70,410 stating that so far the population turning up for the registration was low, calling upon all stakeholders to sensitize locals on importance of registering as a voters.
According to the report Endebess constituency leads with total number registered being 2,157 followed closely by Kiminini 2035, Saboti 2,008 Cherangany 1,870 and Kwanza tailing at 1,412.
He stated that during the initial stage of voter registration locals turned up in large numbers for registration however the process started slowing down until now locals are not turning up for the exercise.
The IEBC election manager however expressed some of the remedies put up by the commission in tackling such challenges which includes offering civic education by IEBC staff spread in every ward that are moving from house to house in disseminating education to locals on importance of registering as a voters.
He stated that youths have not taken initiative of registering as voters claiming that such acts if not well addressed might hinder smooth flow of registration of voters.
On the other hand, Ronald Jumbe DAP-K election board chair has appealed to locals to turn up in large numbers in registering as voters so as to participate in democratic process of electing leaders of their choice.
“Following a report that we have gathered from IEBC, voter registration exercise was not satisfactory and am calling on all locals who have not registered as voters to turn up in large numbers and participate in the registration process that is ongoing,” stated Jumbe
He claimed youths are seen in public rallies yet they have not taken an initiative of registering as voters.
