Two people died on the spot Sunday mid-morning following a road accident that involved a canter lorry at Kaburengu along Eldoret – Webuye highway in Matete, Kakamega County.
According to the eyewitnesses the accident occurred after the lorry developed brakes failure while descending the steep Chimoi slope making the driver unable to control it before it rammed into vehicles that have been abandoned on the road after being involved in an accident along the busy highway three days ago.
The residents accused traffic officers for abandoning the two trucks on the road after being involved in an accident thus causing the death of the two.
“Maybe the two could have survived if these lorries had been removed here the day they were involved in an accident,” they said.
Confirming the incident Matete Sub County Police Commander Thomas Ototo the canter driver lost control after brakes failure smashing into a static vehicle before the canter rolled severally and landed in a ditch killing the driver and his contractor on the spot.
The police boss used the opportunity to urge drivers operating along the highway to be extra careful and adhere to the traffic regulations in order to reduce rampant cases of accidents along the highway.
The deceased’s bodies were removed by officers from Matete police station and taken to Webuye sub county hospital mortuary in the neighbouring Bungoma county.
