An elderly woman from Kisamu village in Marakusi sub location, Lugari Sub County is counting loses after unknown arsonists set fire on her kitchen and livestock manger killing her cows.
According to Julia Avedi who is a widow the inferno exploded at around 12:30am as she enjoyed midnight slumber.
She said she was awakened by a heavy commotion outside as the cows struggled to escape and when she went to check on what was happening she was shocked to see her kitchen and animal manger on fire.
“I was deep asleep when I was awakened by a commotion outside at around 12:30am, I rose up and dashed out quickly only to find my kitchen and livestock manger engulfed in a big flame,” said Avedi.
She said her efforts to fight the inferno were futile which ended up consuming assorted property stored inside and two dairy animals. The animals were burnt beyond recognition. Three other dairy animals escaped with injuries.
“My efforts to try and salvage part of the property inside were thwarted by the fierce inferno and I couldn’t rescue anything, only three cows escaped after managing to untie the ropes I had used to tether them,” she added.
She said that the structures may have been set on fire using a highly flammable substance, saying that the tremendous explosion witnessed was clear evidence.
The granny has estimated the total loss to be over Ksh. 100,000.
Neighbors led by Mr. Ezekiel Sirengo have bitterly condemned the incident appealing for thorough investigations that will see the culprits face the full wrath of law.
“It is inhumane for someone to do this to this widow, we are appealing to the security apparatus to swing in and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book,” said Mr. Sirengo.
Officers from Pan Paper police patrol base have launched investigations aimed at arresting and establishing the motive of the arson.
