A group of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists in Nandi County led by Kapsabet County Referral Hospital Ear, Nose and Throat specialist Mrs. Caroline Julai has called upon residents of Nandi with hearing impairment to consider visiting the facility for diagnosis to ascertain the cause and  if it is treatable.
Speaking to journalists in Kapsabet town during the World commemoration of persons living with hearing impairment, the group urged all the residents and probably parents with children facing such challenges to visit the Hospital for medication.
According to Mrs Julai, hearing impairment is caused by certain infections, trauma and challenges caused by an expectant mother failing to get vaccinated during the period thus causing such deformities to the unborn child, thus it is necessary for expectant mothers to get all the immunizations required during the period.
She said that Kapsabet County Referral Hospital offer Nose, Throat and Ear medical services urging Nandi residents to utilize the facility very well.
Hearing impairment is a total or significant loss of hearing and it’s chief symptom is an inability to hear sound.
Common causes are:
-Too much ear wax
-Loud or prolonged noise exposure-Exposure to loud loud noise/sounds can damage the cells of ones inner ear.
-Ageing-degeneration of inner ear structures occur overtime
-Getting an object stuck in the ear
-Medication side effects
-Some illnesses
The problem is usually self-diagnose and treatment can help but the condition cannot be cured.
For some, hearing may be possible with surgery or a hearing device,  lip-reading skills, written or printed text and sign language may help with communication.
