North Rift journalists have called upon the government to respect the freedom of the press by not interfering with their work when it comes to the issue of access to information.
Speaking during the commemoration of the World Press Freedom day, North Rift journalists Chair Jimmy Gudaga said freedom of the press in Kenya has not been achieved yet because they still face challenges on information access and on their day to day professionalism work as many have been killed and even injured while on duty.
They called upon the government to ensure their constitutional rights as journalists are observed to the latter to make their work easier.
This year’s World Press Freedom theme is “Journalism under Digital Siege” thus the government should give journalists ample time of doing their work without any interference.
They marked the day by visiting one of the children’s’ home with goodies to celebrate the day.
Three journalists in North Rift have lost their lives in a span of five years while on duty due to lack of press freedom thus the government should let the freedom of the press prevail and put in more efforts to ensure safety of journalists.
