Over 200 pupils of Mukhalanya primary school in Lugari constituency have been forced to take classes under trees after their classrooms collapsed.

According to the school’s head teacher Stephen Wesonga Mutimba, the affected classrooms are those used by grade four, five and six pupils.

The head teacher said it is lucky that the incident occurred at night when the pupils were at home saying had it happened during day time when the school is on there could have been casualties.

The head teacher said the school which is among the oldest schools in the region with a total population of over 1,000 pupils is faced with shortage of classrooms after a total of five  classrooms and the administration block were condemned by the department of public health in the area.

He said with the current weather conditions, learning is totally disrupted whenever it rains since the pupils who take lessons under trees are forced to share classrooms with others.

According to the School Board of Management chairman Mr. Vincent Masika the affected building was condemned over ten years ago adding that efforts by the school management to get help to construct new classrooms have been in vain forcing pupils and teachers to continue taking classes in that dangerous condition.

The BOM has estimated the cost of constructing new five classrooms and administration block to be Kshs. 8 million appealing to local leaders and well-wishers to help put up new structures and create a conducive learning environment for both pupils and teachers.

“We are in need of about Kshs. 8,000,000 we appeal to our  local leaders, county and national governments to help us raise the figure and put up new classrooms and an administration block,” they said.
