West Pokot governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo has lauded the clergy who have been tirelessly preaching peace among the warring communities especially in the North Rift without any form of support but for the purpose of ensuring that communities live harmoniously.
Prof. Lonyangapuo cited that majority of reformed warriors who have been cattle rustlers are now peace ambassadors through the clergy in the remote parts of the region and become pastors who have in turn changed many to leave the vice of banditry.
The County boss who spoke during the National peace prayer caravan at Makutano stadium in Kapenguria where he urged leaders and politicians to observe sobriety by toning down in campaigns for smooth operations during this electioneering period.
He said that the majority of the bordering counties are now living in peace that has seen great improvement in enrollment of children to schools.
This comes few days after Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Maalim Mohammed cautioned politicians in the region over planning parallel political campaign meetings.
The RC said that politicians should follow the public order act and should notify the security team on any political meetings they have.
“We don’t want unhealthy competition in planning meetings. We don’t want conflicts. Politicians are required to inform the security team so that officers can plan themselves and provide security,” he said.
He called on politicians to conduct peaceful campaigns without distorting peace.
“We must stay as brothers and sisters. Politics will come and go,” he said.
He said that as the Government, they have put in place measures on election preparedness.
“We have started regional multi-sect oral committees through County Commissioners, Deputy County Commissioners and other stakeholders. The official campaigns ahead of the 9th August starts on 8th June, 2022,” said Maalim.
Speaking on Tuesday after meeting with chiefs and their assistants at Mtelo Hall in Kapenguria, Mr Maalim who was on the tour to familiarize himself with the region said that he has also met with the security team and Government officers working in the region.
