The bid for Nairobi Senator Johnston Sakaja to become Nairobi City County Governor has Wednesday suffered a big blow after the Commission for University Education (CUE) revoked recognition of his Bachelor’s degree from Uganda based Team University.
In a letter dated June 14 to the Senator, CUE Chairperson Prof. Chacha Nyaigothi says “They have received material information concerning the authenticity of the Senator’s degree presented from Team University that will require further investigation to ascertain its validity.”
The nullification of recognition of the UDA candidate degree has since been communicated to the Chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati and the Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. George Magoha.
CUE’s move comes just a day after Youth Advocacy Africa, a Kenyan based NGO wrote to Uganda’s first lady Janet Museveni who is also the Countries Cabinet Minister for Education to compel the Team University to revoke the degree it issued to the Nairobi Senator in October 2021.
According to the 2010 Constitution, any person eyeing the gubernatorial seat must have a degree from a university recognized in Kenya.
Senator Johnston Sakaja is being accused of forging a degree from Team University. Meanwhile Immigration records indicate that Sakaja travelled only once to Uganda on 17th October 2014 for Parliamentary business and not educational purposes.
The country now awaits the move to be taken by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
