Boda boda operators in Bungoma have been urged to be more careful and attentive on the roads especially this campaign period to avoid loss of lives that may occur due to carelessness.
According to the Traffic Base Commander in Bungoma South Simon Irungu most of these operators are always out of their mind especially on the roads. This follows most of them instead of concentrating and focussing on where they are going they keep on multithinking and lose their concentration.
Campaign periods have seen many injured or lose lives because they keep on shifting their focus to the loud music on the roads played by campaigning politicians and instead of transporting goods or passengers they end up losing focus and cause accidents.
Mr. Irungu has also cautioned against drunk operators saying they risk losing their machines plus put in custody if they will not change the risk behaviours they have adopted.
The Base Commander has also asked them to desist from giving their machines to squads commonly known a ‘’mkondo’’ He says those giving out squads should ensure they do it to the rightful people and not to inexperienced riders or school going children especially during vacations saying a number of accidents happening are as a result of the inexperienced, unknowledgeable and ignorant riders.
He has also advised the riders to be keen on their safety by wearing proper gears like helmets, reflective jackets and desist from wearing slippers instead to look for better shoes or boots for comfortability and safety.
Irungu says that if the operators will follow the laid traffic rules on the roads more lives will be saved and the country will be productive.
