Kenya’s long time dominance in the 1500 meters race was brought to an end early Wednesday morning after Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang finished sixth and seventh respectively at the World Championships in Oregon, USA.
Cheruiyot clocked a seasonal best of 3:30:69 while his compatriot Abel Kipsang clocked 3:31:21.
Great Britain’s Jake Wightman upset the field to win gold in 3:29:23 as Olympic Champion Filip Ingrebrigsten of Norway settled for silver in 3:29:47. Spain’s Mohamed Katir bagged bronze in 3:29:40.
This was the fourth gold medal for Kenya to loose in the World Championships after women’s marathon, men’s marathon and men’s steeplechase.
Kenya lies third on medal standings with six medals; one gold, three silver and two bronze.
United States tops with 18 medals: six gold, five silver and seven bronze.
Ethiopia is second with three gold and three silver medals
