Due to high living standards and scarcity of food experienced across the nation this year, maize farmers in Trans Nzoia County have been urged to safeguard their produce during this harvest season in order to curb for the impending danger of hunger in the future dates.
Addressing mourners at the burial ceremony of Micah Wanjala in Muungano sub-location in Kiminini constituency, Matunda location, area chief Jeremiah Kibunguchi called on the maize farmers to control food wastage in order to fight hunger and food shortage in the nation come next year. He reminded them of the difficult situations they have gone through this year due to scarcity of maize and high food prices in the nation.
“I would like to remind you to manage your food produce during this harvest season so as to control hunger and food shortage in the future dates. We all know of the difficulties we’ve gone through in terms of maize flour prices and its scarcity across the nation, I therefore urge you to safeguard our produce for us to be in position to fight hunger.” Kibunguchi stated.
Kibunguchi told them to be responsible enough and differentiate between subsistence food produce besides other luxury food stuffs such as bread and (mandazis). He reminded them of the importance of having food in house rather than selling it in exchange with other unnecessary food stuffs.
Chief Kibunguchi later informed them to be vigilant and protect their maize from the risen groups of thieves that are harvesting and destroying farmers’ maize in various parts of the County. He told farmers to report any suspicious group of individuals and he will do everything in ensuring that those criminals are arrested and charged for their crimes.
